Abstract

At the intersection of two streets in Pelotas, amidst the cars that cross in all directions, children from the past who seem to forget that they were playing in the street, clinging to their hands, circulate with hasty steps, other children with legs that are still small, driven as soon as they see the city pass in the corner of their eye. There, two schools of kindergarten and elementary education coexist. The adult's pace, accelerated like that of vehicles, does not seem to respect the curious gaze of the little ones. Should we accept that the street is a place for speed or can we make it a space suited to the desires, needs and conviviality of all its users? What would that space look like? Can the urban space in the school environment have a different time? To be a city study tool? How, as an architect and urban planner, can I provoke a look at this space, effectively seeking a city for people, where the street is seen as a space for conviviality and strengthening of the collectivity? These questions are the impetus for the present work, which aims to identify the needs of the school environment to suggest possibilities for adaptation and new uses of public space in the school-city interface. It is part of the area of Environmental Perception and has as a point of interest aspects of the reciprocal relationship between users and space. He believes in the practical possibilities of stimulating new relationships with the city and with urban action. The methodology used is a combination of technical analysis and the perception of those who experience the space. It is developed through bibliographic review, site assessment tools and dialogue with users. I preferentially immerse myself in the writing of women; as an architect interested in educational endeavors, I am guided by another like myself: Architect Mayumi de Souza Lima; To think about education, a field that is dear and distant to me in my training, I turn to educators such as bell hooks, Léa Tiriba and the patron Paulo Freire. From the beginning, the research process looked for ways of action in order to displace the thinking with head for thinking with the whole body, this desire materialized in two urban intervention actions that present themselves as a tool and also a result. The present study was crossed by the consequences of the pandemic, the closing of schools diverted thought to a broader view of education, culminating not in the suggestion of a space that meets school needs, but in possibilities for a space that values the city´s educational role. The reflections generated cover aspects of research linked to university extension and the role of the architect in a changing world. The path culminated in a proposition that is placed as a utopian exercise, willing to encourage other actions.
