Pentecostalismo e periferia : uma etnografia sobre religião e criação simbólica em espaços periféricos de Pelotas/RS

Abstract

The present ethnographic study deals with the relations established between Pentecostalism and the urban periphery context in the city of Pelotas, RS, illustrating some aspects of the cultural invention resulting from the dialectics of religion and civility. Thus, Pentecostalism in the periphery is considered as a religious phenomenon that acquires specific characteristics within the wide spectrum of Pentecostal religious manifestations. The present research is situated, therefore, within the field of religion, being articulated in two main axes: Pentecostal religiosity and the context of urban periphery. Then, after showing some theoretical and methodological paths of the present research, I seek to expose the ethnographic data through two forms of observation that constitute some distinct heuristic contributions to the Pentecostal phenomenon in the periphery: a panoramic look as well as a more located look. In the final part, I comment on the poetics of the movement that constitutes the discourse and religious practices regarding the genesis, formation, and propagation of Pentecostal communities, which evidences the formation of some regularities strongly related to the dynamics of residing in the periphery
