Abstract

The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the processes of construction and interpretation of the “baianos” representation in Rio Grande-RS region. With the installation of the Naval Pole, an impressive variety of workers from outside appeared in the city because of the jobs that the Polo offered. Conflicts generated by the meeting between riograndinos with these workers emerged the figure of the "baiano". Reconstructing the process in which this figure was erected, one could see that the baiano could be either someone born in the state of Bahia, and in Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, etc., so that the designation did not obey the geographic divisions, race or class. The figure of the "baiano" is the result of foreign operations synthesis thereby made the Rio Grande that seeks to position the "other" and maintain the native position. Thus, the configuration where the sign "baiano" is supported by a logic that suggests acts 1) as subjective nuisance native front of certain behavioral traits from abroad that break with the normative expectations present in each context, 2) the feeling of culture threat that unsettle the distribution of material and symbolic resources that already exist or that thereby made with the installation of Naval Pole, 3) to a difference in the appropriation and incorporation degrees of the meanings that regulate the rules and violations of behavior spaces, and 4) an imbalance framework in the organization and cohesion of the groups that participate and update these spaces.
