A construção poética da banda Freak Brotherz: música e quadrinhos underground.

Abstract

The band Freak Brotherz, resident in the city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, has over 20 years of career, producing authorial music under the genre Rock. In addition to music, the band constitutes its poetics based on contemporary visual arts, being deeply influenced by the underground comics of the 60s and 70s. This crossing is shown since the constitution of the band's name (coming from the characters of Gilbert Shelton - icon of the underground comics), until the production of its visual identity, contained mainly on the album covers, which bring drawings produced by local artists, alluding to underground comics. The work carried out here brings as a context the countercultural discourse, present in the protest movements of the 60s and 70s (movements for the rights of women, gays, blacks, against the Vietnam War, in addition to university demonstrations), in the United States, which shaped the construction of a generation of comic artists, inspired by the aesthetics of the underground movement. To understand this dynamic, I use a diversity of authors, among them, the Italian Mario Maffi, who discusses Underground culture, including the paths of sequential art imbued with this culture. I bring to light, the construction of the poetics of a rock band, which has more than 20 years of career, and which produces music being traversed by visual arts, by underground comics, exposing the importance of their poetic expression and fostering local culture.
