Passo dos Negros: Entre Narrativas, Etnografias e Conflitos.

Abstract

This research presents an anthropological study, about the territory of Passo dos Negros in Pelotas/RS. From the perspective of ethnographies, narratives, oralities and conflicts, we seek to understand this region since the beginning of its construction in the middle of the 19th century, with the arrival of enslaved men, women and children, for the production of beef jerky and many others works, which resulted in the construction and heyday of the city of Pelotas. Many of these families, the majority of whom were black, remained in the area in the post-abolition period, working at Engenho Pedro Osório. However, although the extinction of slave labor has occurred, due to the Golden Law, we can say that slave thinking still remains internalized in society. With the end of the jerky period, some dairies and fishmongers settled in the place, but some time later, they also ended up closing the doors. Currently, many of these residents are charioteers, self-employed professionals, domestic workers, who move daily to other neighborhoods to seek their livelihood. In this space, in recent years, luxury loans have been arriving, bringing changes in the landscape, as well as insecurity and uncertainty for these residents. They claim the recognition of their heritage, as a tool of fight. Thus, I seek through the narratives and the anthropological view, to understand the conflicts that happen in the territory of Passo dos Negros.
