Heranças e transgressões na arquitetura contemporânea brasileira: Una Arquitetos.

Abstract

This study has as its theme the contemporary architecture and as its object of study the Una Arquitetos office, elected in 2010 as one of the most relevant of the “new generation” of Brazilian architecture. Its development is based on the assumption that part of contemporary architecture can be understood from the recognition of the inheritances and transgressions of the modern legacy and that this recognition occurs, consciously or unconsciously, through typological operations. From this assumption, therefore, the objective of the study derives: to investigate possible typological relationships between the works of Una Arquitetos with themselves and with modern and contemporary projects. A preliminary construction of “typological series” of the office’s works, grouped chronologically around “common formal structures”, led to the central questioning of the research: how these typological structures dialogue with modern and contemporary solutions, accepting them, transforming them or even destroying them? In order to answer these questions, it has been developed bibliographic, documentary and analytic research procedures that, in a non-linear way, sought to confront narratives of the “architects” and of the “critics” about the theme, as well as narratives of the “works” themselves, more specifically, about single-family residential architecture. In each one of the identified “series”, typological similarities between the houses of Una and modern and contemporary São Paulo houses were recognized. Plotting relationships - “in”, “back” and “sides” - a more complex web were built, in which past and present overlap themselves in continuous reinterpretations and transgressions. Without the intention of reaching a totalizing and definitive approach, which would reduce the understanding of the object of study and of the design process in which it is inserted, the research expands the reflections on the production of Una and, by sampling, on the production of the Brazilian contemporary architecture, which justifies the proposed study.
