Partido Independente do Uruguai: raízes político-institucionais, características programáticas e organizacionais

Abstract

The thesis aims at the Independent Party (PI), an Uruguayan party, created in 2002. The main intention is to analyze the case of the PI, in order to capture as widely as possible its characteristics and its peculiarities, as well as its contradictions and the relations it establishes with the political system of which it forms part. The specific objectives are intended to recover the historical process in the left-wing field that led to the founding of the PI, to examine its organizational characteristics, politicalprogrammatic proposals and electoral performance. The task also involves discussing the condition of a new party, the way in which it has sought to broaden its organizational base and the degree of institutionalization achieved. The thesis also seeks to overcome a gap in the production of Political Science over Uruguay by adding the specific analysis on the origin and the characteristics of this party. However, rather than simply filling a gap, the justification for conducting the research is related to what it can reveal about the country's parties and to add in terms of identifying trends and long-term perspectives of the political system. The sources of research used were articles, books and academic research, memoirs and interviews, press materials, documents produced by the PI, election results and public opinion polls.
