Abstract

Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, there has been a transformation in the criteria used to identify culturally signifi cant buildings, increasing the number of recognized and valued assets. This growth, driven by economic, political, social, cultural, and technological factors, has created tensions between the relationships of the old and the new, making it necessary to constantly reflect critically on the possibilities for dialogue between pre-existing and proposed structures, theory and practice. This research is premised on the idea that restoration theoretical knowledge should not disregarded, but rethought and revised to engage with contemporary demands. The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the impact of contemporary ideals on the practice of restoration projects to identify topics that contribute to self-disciplinary refl ection. Considering this, intervention project strategies are analyzed within buildings that encompass the expansions that have taken place in the field. The research focuses on projects nominated for the Premio Internazionale Domus di Restauro e Conservazione, an Italian award promoted by the University of Ferrara in partnership with Fassa Bortolo company. The methodological procedures consist of reviewing the theoretical framework, analyzing the winning project, and critically examining three case studies: 1. The Shima Kitchen project by Atelier Ryo Abe, Japan; 2. The Koya project by Issei Suma, Japan; and 3. The Yun House (Yun Lu) Boutique Eco-resort project by Ares Partners, China. In order to encompass projects that represent recent expansions in the restoration discipline, the research scope established the followed criteria: correspond to a non-exceptional architectural character and contribute to discussions on the impact of restoration projects on the social fabric. The research presented the projects analyses through three texts in essay format entitled “Could a Structure Self-Transform?”, “Let the Hub Be..” and “Dialogue and Space Continuity,” respectively. The texts contemplate empirical experimentation and theoretical framework. The research demonstrates that contemporary ideals are associated with recognizing the intersection of various spheres of life, which implies a search for more integrated solutions that strengthen social structure through collaborative and pluralistic processes. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of connecting diff erent areas of knowledge, promoting an integrated discourse that avoids limitations inherent to each fi eld in isolation. The fi ndings enhance discussions about design theory and practice, providing support and critical repertoire for researchers and professionals.
