Os papéis do Inglês e Nove Noites: o dilema da representação do outro e de si

Abstract

This work analyses the narratives of Ruy Duarte de Carvalhos Os Papéis do Inglês ( and Bernardo Carvalho´s Nove Noites (2006), in which both narrators search for information on the mysterious suicides of anthropologists archibald Perkings, in the first narrative, and Buell Quain, in the latter. As ethnogra phers, the narrators seek out people, accounts, and archives that may lead them to the truth about those enigmas. The chosen narratives present elements that can be verified outside the diegesis, narrators that explain their production process, and that di splay similiarities with the author´s lives. One can verifyed in these novels the use of the first person, the attempt to represent the other who is culturally diferente and also to look at themselves, in a game that mixes reality to fiction. T These characteristics prompt an analysis of the novels taking into account the relationship between literature and anthropology, since they reflect two tendencies of the contemporary narrative: the return of the author and the ethnographic turn. This work aims to think about the relationship of narrators and authors with the writing of the other and of themselves, as well as the impressions and experiences generated from the coexistence with the other.
