Abstract
This work presents an agent based – cellular environment model for urban growth and social processes
simulation, focused specially on poverty location dynamics. The research is conducted through
computer simulations based on unequal development theory, the capitalist production of space,
complexity theories on urbanization and computer urban growth dynamic modelling. It advances urban
dynamic simulation through cellular automata and agent based modelling, while integrating explicit social location choice modelling with local, self-organized urban growth dynamics. The model is implemented on experimental exercises on urban growth based on urban and natural environment attributes on which the autonomous agent population allocation takes place. It also proposes the appraisal of four scenarios in which explicit and heterogeneous social entities interact between themselves and with the environment to settle urban form patterns and to potentially engage in conflict. The model results on population allocation and conflict patterns which demonstrate an enduring existence of conflict in city form social appropriation in capitalist-determined urban development processes, pointing to contributions on social and city form roles in urban simulations, while suggesting an improvement in urban growth modelling capacities through the specification of particular observations on the modelled environment.
