Abstract

The research is about furniture for housing of social interest (HIS) and the space conflicts that occur in the interaction between the "living spaces", the "inhabitant" and the "furniture". The housing meets the essential needs of the human being, making it size and quality important to the health, safety and privacy of the user, and today is considered as a basic right at the Brazilian constitution. Therefore, one of the goals of the government's programs of HIS construction in Brazil is to expand the access to adequate housing for the low-income population. In this type of situation, the reduced dimensions of the residences appear as an obstacle in the moment to equip and to furnish these spaces, a situation that represents a conflict between the architectural typology adopted and the real needs of its users. This investigation becomes relevant when it contributes to the knowledge of the reality in the HIS interior of a medium sized city in Brazil and how the inhabitants equip these reduced spaces. In this context, the study objective is to analyze the spatial conflicts of the furniture inserted by the residents in the case study HIS, elaborating basic recommendations of flexible and multifunctional furniture. The research begins with the idea that the furniture should mold itself to reduced living space, because of the large number of HIS constructions already materialized in the country and that are in use by the beneficiary population. The work is inserted in the study area of the relations of environment and behavior adopting methods and techniques of Post-Occupancy Assessment. The research is conducted from a case study: the community living in PAC-Anglo, located in the city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The analyzes developed for each variable identified and evidenced the main problems of inadequacy in the living place facing the living space, the resident and the furniture. It was concluded in this work that, due to the minimal spaces with which HIS are designed, the quality of the furniture use and the functional performance of the residences are compromised, becoming an inadequate space in the face of the high rates of space conflicts found in the study housings, negatively affecting the user's perception of the domestic activities that are performed in the daily life of the residents. The work ends with basic recommendations of flexible and multifunctional furniture, which lead to the optimization of the spaces, bringing benefits of functionality and comfort to the users.
