Temas arquitetônicos e tendências pós-modernas em Pelotas, 1985-2005.

Abstract

Since the 1960s, at the international level, the criticism of the Modern Movement has been intensively aroused. Alternatives and experimentations were produced, some of them gathered under the label of postmodern architecture. However, it was only after 1985 that one might speak of architecture close to the postmodern condition, produced in Pelotas-RS. A survey was carried out in the central area of the city, in search of formal features on the façades of the buildings, which due to their stylistics, resemble the examples of the main postmodern trends, according to the international critique of the preceding decades. It was also studied the Brazilian assimilation of the revision of Modernism, highlighting the 1980s, when there was a greater openness to international discussions and controversies in the field of architecture. In the analysis of the architecture of Pelotas, taken from the postmodern literature review, six architectural themes were chosen: pluralism, symbolism, contextualism, historicism, rationalism and technicalism. With those themes, a stylistic analysis of forty-eight buildings was developed. Thorough the analysis, it was verified that those architectural themes, already experienced in consecrated examples of the postmodern, were also timidly present in the sample buildings of Pelotas. The analyzed buildings of Pelotas do not coincide temporarily with the production of the critically acclaimed postmodern references in their countries of origin, mainly Western Europe and the United States. The study allows inferring that the architecture, which manifested itself in Pelotas after the middle eighties, was a local adaptation of an international phenomenon.
