Abstract

This master's research collaborates with the research on urbanism, especially with regard to the urbanization of free spaces of public use built in the limits of cities and that make contact with water. A critical analysis of classic texts of urbanism and other disciplines, such as philosophy and literature, together with visits to some urban borders, constructed in the present time, with the objective of realizing a "Cartography of the Limit" is sought to understand the becoming of contemporary society and the need for good spaces of public use to ensure a good quality of life for citizens. Two distinct types of writing enable contemporary maps to be developed which reveal the search for an agency of heterogeneous authors and investigates the quality of free spaces for public use and their salutary relationship between man and nature. One of the writings selects some literary works, which deal with the wonderful wisdoms about the cities, especially regarding the free spaces of public use, with the aim of constructing a "Literary Cartography" that proposes to investigate issues inherent to contemporary urban becoming. Several themes inherent to contemporary urbanism, such as; the dynamics of urban growth, mobility, human senses, urbanity and the preservation of nature, are transposed into a "Literary Cartography", which appropriates foreign sciences, such as philosophy and literature, and seeks to recognize new possibilities for the deepening of the research on public use spaces on wet edges, thus diluting the endless path that the urbanist must follow in the search of understanding his time. The other writing makes visits to some borders built in contemporary times, with the purpose of elaborating a "Cartography of the Senses", which explores the connection between the urban environment and water, reports the experience of walking along the wet edges of some cities and exalts the relationship with public space and water.
