Abstract
Much has been said about contemporary architecture in recent years, but the
Brazilian residences are still little studied. This work has as general objective to
analyze the single-family residential production of three offices, whose members are
part of the new generation of Brazilian architects, trying to identify recurrent formal
design processes and formal structures. In order to do so, two concepts were used
that support all work – type and tectonics – in the expectation of understanding its
potentialities and constraints, both as tools of analysis and as tools of design.
Documentary research was done through data collection on the projects and graphic
and textual analysis of the projects following pre-established type and tectonic
scripts. From the identification of similarities regarding design procedures and
compositional characteristics, the works under study were grouped and organized
into typological groups – where, at the moment, the concept of type was used as a
classificatory instrument –, to be analyzed from as happened the design process. In
relation to the concept of type, it is emphasized its importance in architecture
analysis and how to apply project methods that correspond to certain types of
program. The intersection of the typological analysis with the tectonic analysis was
carried out, mainly, from the tectonic studies of Gottfried Semper and Kenneth
Frampton. In this way, the work identified general systems, common to the three
offices studied, and particular, through groupings of recurrences and exceptionalities
among the works. The research recognizes, finally, the intrinsic relation of tradition –
from the concepts of type and tectonics – and the vanguard movements with the
contemporary design process.
